One system for all smart projects
Bornheim, July 10, 2018. Dimming the lights, turning off the heating, protecting the house from unauthorized access – smart solutions are on the market for numerous functions in consumers’ homes and gardens. Most of these systems are mutually incompatible, however, and require different control systems and apps to be used. Hornbach can now present “SMART HOME by hornbach”, an internally developed system solution that integrates large numbers of smart products and controls these via a central app.
“Our stores and online shop have been the preferred point of contact for customers wishing to make their homes smarter for some time now”, comments Susanne Jäger, the member of the Board of Management of Hornbach Baumarkt AG responsible for procurement. “Whether it is garden watering systems, thermostats, garage door drive systems or window sensors – we currently offer more than 300 smart products. One key wish voiced by many of our customers in the past was to have greater compatibility and the ability to manage all these functions via a central app. To satisfy this wish, we have developed a system solution that will gradually integrate all relevant products for our customers. From advice on installation through to launching operations – customers can obtain the whole package from a single source if they wish. Smart living has never been this easy.”
Easy and intuitive operation
A central gateway manages all communications with the connected devices and acts as the brain of “SMART HOME by hornbach”. The gateway costs Euro 79.99, has sev-eral integrated wireless standards, and offers a USB interface to facilitate future extensions. It is available at Hornbach’s online shop and is currently also being rolled out to all 97 Hornbach stores in Germany, a process that will be completed by the end of the year. The devices are controlled via an iOS and Android app that can be downloaded free of charge at the App or Play Store. Alternatively, the system can also be managed via browser, enabling customers to use their computers or laptops rather than their smartphones if they so wish. This option is often not available with other systems. The system is easy to use, intuitive, and can be operated from anywhere in the world. When on holiday, for example, forgetful users can simply turn off their heating, activate alarm systems, and check whether the windows are closed and the lights off.
Fixed-price installation and operations launch
The smart products offered in the Security, Convenience, Energy, and Care product ranges are currently compatible with “SMART HOME by hornbach”. These include cameras from D-Link, smoke alarms and water detectors from Fibaro, radiator thermo-stats from Danfoss, and the full lighting range from Philips Hue. Products from Steinel, such as motion detectors and outdoor floodlights, are set to follow in the near future. Alexa, Amazon’s voice service, can already be used and the system will soon also be compatible with Google Assistant.
Customers at all Hornbach stores where “SMART HOME by hornbach” is already available also have the option of booking an installation service. Here, they can select from a variety of service packages and themselves decide how many products they wish to operate and which different scenarios should be set up. The products are then installed – punctually, professionally, and at a fixed price – by professionals at Hornbach’s Tradesman Service. For customers, this represents a one-stop solution with Hornbach as the contract partner. By the end of this year, this service will be on offer throughout Germany. Customers can call up hornbach.de/smarthomebyhornbach at any time to see whether the service is already available in their own region. The site offers a permanently up-to-date overview of compatible products and provides advance notification of any novelties in the pipeline.
Customers are of course free to launch operations with the gateway and the connected devices themselves. This only takes a few work steps. In recent months, specialist advisors at Hornbach stores have received in-depth training on the new system. They would be glad to assist customers with their expertise and offer practical tips.
Security as key priority
The data transmitted between the smart products, the gateway, and the app is fully encrypted and cannot be read by unauthorized parties. Here, Hornbach works with the latest encryption mechanisms. The data is treated with strict confidentiality and is not forwarded to third parties.
